Amy Sery

Adjunct Instructor

My name is Amy Sery! I have been a certified (K-12) art teacher since 2005. Currently, I am the Visual & Media Arts Teacher, the Instructional Tech Guru, a member of the STEM committee at an elementary school in Metro Atlanta, and an adjunct instructor with AOEU. I hold a bachelor’s degree in art education from Georgia State University, a master’s degree in integrated teaching through the arts from Lesley University in Cambridge, and I am completing my EdD in art education in May 2021 at Georgia State University. Before beginning my doctoral degree, I taught adult watercolor and oil painting classes at Kennesaw State University Continuing Education at night.

My research focuses on my pedagogy—Teaching for Artistic Behavior (Douglas, Jaquith, & Thompson, 2018; Jaquith & Hathaway, 2015). If you were to visit my elementary art studio, you would see students working independently and sometimes collaboratively on their ideas within different art media and styles, from drawing to sculpture. I believe that the child is the artist; I am the facilitator. The art studio is set up so students can easily access the materials they need to create. I utilize Hetland, Winner, Veenema, and Sheridan’s (2007) Studio Habits of Mind in planning my lessons. In addition to visual arts, I also teach using technology. Students learn about 3D modeling and 3D printing, game design, digital photography, animation, digital drawing and painting, and graphic design.

I am married to a wonderful French man who manages his family’s restaurant (It’s delicious!). We have an amazing daughter, Sophie, who is in PreK. We love to travel to France to visit family and head down to the Florida beaches when we are home in Georgia. My family also includes Burke—the dog, and Little Bug—the cat.
