Alyson PoulsAdjunct Instructor
Hello, I am Alyson Pouls and am so excited to join the AOEU team! I have extensive experience teaching foundations for a variety of higher education institutions, most recently at Central Michigan University, where I led the visual art education program for pre-service art teachers and served as the foundation’s coordinator. My teaching philosophy supports curricula in both foundations and K-12 art teacher education courses, focusing on conceptual development and using formal and technical skills as the organizing factors to balance three components: concept, skill, and visual qualities. My dissertation analyzed curriculum theories embedded in written foundations course descriptions to create a model of current foundations practices, as well as a suggested model transformed by postmodern art’s practice. I hope to bring greater collaboration between K-12 art education and foundations practice at the college level. I create art that unites fantasy and reality, suggesting beauty within darkness and a manifestation of psychological vulnerability.
When I am not teaching or making art I am spending time with my husband and our two rescue dogs, Vinnie and Dolly. You may also find me outside enjoying nature which often inspires my drawings and paintings. I believe that art education is fundamental to personal development and that art should be at the center of all curriculum.BACK to our team
