Julie SawyerAdjunct Instructor
Hi, I am Julie, and I am excited to join the Art of Education faculty! I live in western Massachusetts and recently retired from a position as a K-12 district department leader of an award-winning Fine and Applied Arts department where I led 15 passionate and dedicated art educators. I am currently a University Supervisor for art education students at Southern CT State University.
I have had the pleasure of teaching visual art in public schools in both Massachusetts and Connecticut for 20 years and have taught students K-12, as well as undergraduates. Some of the most exciting experiences have been leading high school students on three international trips. One of my greatest passions is creating family and community engagement events. Most recently, these have been designed for students and their families who are new immigrants and multilingual learners.
Recently I earned my EdD in Educational Leadership, specifically Inclusive Practices. Before that, I earned an MEd in Integrated Curriculum and an MA in Modern Art History and Contemporary Art. I have been teaching art history online for over a decade with UMass-Lowell.
Currently, my creativity lies in working with kiln glass as well as mixed-media paintings. On the side, I teach a few yoga classes a week—I am a Registered Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance—and I am interested in exploring the meditative aspects of creating art.BACK to our team
