Lowell Sipes

Greetings! My name is Lowell Sipes, and I am an art educator and artist. I have taught visual arts for fourteen years in public school, and am very excited to have the opportunity to help you achieve your goals at the Art of Education University!

My educational background includes a Master of Arts in Fine Arts with a Studio Art emphasis and a minor in Art History, a Master of Arts in Education with a focus on Curriculum and Instruction, and currently, I am continuing studies toward an MFA in Arts Leadership through Seattle University.

In addition to my studio art practice, I have a curatorial background, working for the City of Lakewood in Colorado, and a technical theatre background as well, working for the University of Colorado at Denver and the City of Arvada Center for the Performing Arts. These contributed to the inclusion of three-dimensional and installation work into my studio practice, in which I prefer to take an interdisciplinary approach.

The foundation of my work as an artist, at the center, is two-dimensional. I prefer to work in acrylic paint and mediums, silkscreen, ink, and aerosol paints, often shooting and developing my source materials in 35mm film. I love to layer imagery I have produced with multiple mediums and processes. I feel that a Pop approach best describes the style I most identify with. I gain inspiration from 80s skateboard and surf graphics, early 60s and 70s promotional posters, and, at times, “noncommissioned” work of contemporary artists.

I live between Whidbey Island in Washington State and Adliswil Switzerland with my partner, Vera, and my son, Ocean Zephyr.

Professional Achievements:

Metropolitan State College of Denver Bachelor’s Degree (2006)

Colorado Christian University Master’s Degree (2009)

Regis University Master’s Degree (2018)
