Description

Students will create an abstract black and white series of paintings. Students will study and evaluate mark making, width of line, shape, positive and negative space, composition, and contrast through this lesson.

Students will identify and discuss how emphasis is created by composition and techniques used.

  • Acrylic painting surface (canvas, canvas board, primed wood)
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Brushes (flat and round of different sizes)
  • Water cup
  • Examples/reproduction of Franz Kline’s artwork

Brainstorm Thumbnails

Create a preliminary study of abstract thumbnails based on lines, shapes, textures, and forms. Pull from surroundings for inspiration. Draw with permanent black marker on drawing paper or in sketchbooks.
