Buddying Up: 2D to 3D

Lesson Plan

Description

Students will research fictional creatures and draw their own original creature. Students will switch drawings with a buddy, create a 3D model of their buddy’s creature using air-dry clay, and write a reflection supporting their choices throughout the artistic process.

  • Present a collection of creatures from myths and legends.
  • Demonstrate making a drawing of an original creature using graphite and colored pencils.
  • Assign each student a buddy within the class and ask students to trade drawings.
  • Explain how to manipulate wire to make an armature, and then finish the sculpture with foil and clay.

  • Drawing materials
  • ⅛ gauge wire, thin, flexible wire, and wire cutters
  • Tinfoil
  • Air-dry clay (e.g., Crayola Model Magic) and sculpting tools
  • Acrylic paint, paintbrushes, water containers
  • Craft supplies (e.g., pipe cleaners, wooden shapes, feathers)
  • Hot glue guns and hot glue sticks
  • Research materials (internet, books, etc.)
