Description
Students will reflect upon stories of change in their family history while studying the ‘Migration Series’ by Jacob Lawrence. Using mixed-media and applying key design concepts, students will create a cut-paper collage to convey a family narrative of choice.

Lesson Objectives
Students will discuss and examine the use of contrast and analyze the narrative concepts depicted in Lawrence’s series.
Students will reflect upon a family story, a personal story or memory to inspire the artwork.
Students will generate several ideas with thumbnail sketches and will refine one image to include in their artwork.
Teaching Strategies
- Present the ‘Migration Series’ series and discuss Lawrence’s use of design principles and narrative imagery.
- Guide students through narrative brainstorming
- Demonstrate the idea generation process for a narrative artwork using thumbnail sketches.
- Share strategies for mixing colors and applying brush textures to make painted papers for the final collage.

- Mixed-media paper, 11”x14” (2-3 per student)
- White poster board, 11”x14” or larger
- Paint materials (acrylic, tempera, brushes)
- Drawing materials (graphite, pastels, colored pencil, markers)
- Collage materials (newspaper, patterned paper, magazines)
- Collage adhesive (liquid glue, glue stick)
- Scissors and/or craft knives with cutting mats
