Description

Students will analyze the mood and meaning of Jackson Pollock's and Willem de Kooning's artwork as they experiment with modified paintbrushes while painting. They will focus more on the process than the product while creating a musically-inspired Abstract Expressionist painting.

Students will gain an understanding that sometimes art is more about the process than the product.

Students will utilize a paintbrush taped to a dowel to create a gestural drawing with black paint.

  • Black india ink or diluted acrylic or tempera
  • 18" x 24" large white paper
  • Three different paintbrushes
  • Dowels
  • Paint cup
  • Masking tape
  • Three different types of music (e.g., violin, jazz, banjo)
  • Images of artwork from Jackson Pollock and Willem de Koonig
