Description

Students will design a graffiti tag inspired by an important memory or place. They will create a faux brick wall on red construction paper to tag using printmaking techniques. They will use lettering and collage to complete their project.

Students will learn about graffiti art by comparing and contrasting images from notable graffiti and street artists.

Students will use printmaking techniques to create a faux brick wall for the background.

Students will select a descriptive word symbolizing an important place or event in their home, school, or community.

Students will create bubble letters illustrating a word in the style of a graffiti tag.

Students will add meaning to the artwork by adding details.

Students will investigate the messages created by other classmates’ artwork through a group critique.

Teaching Strategies

  • Facilitate a conversation about graffiti as an art form and introduce graffiti tags
  • Guide students in selecting a word symbolizing an important place or event in their home, school, or community life.
  • Introduce the think, pair, share activity, and assist students in selecting an event or memory and a descriptive word.
  • Demonstrate how to use a sponge to print a repeated brick background pattern.
  • Model how to create bubble letters and assemble the collaged elements of the artwork.
  • Facilitate a class critique focusing on how the event or memory was communicated in the word.
