Students will design patterns and use visual storytelling to make their own vessel inspired by Greek art history. They will use the sgraffito technique to render their stories, emphasizing the positive and negative spaces in their artwork.

  • Canvas mats
  • Newsprint paper or wax paper (same size as clay)
  • Pencils & erasers
  • Clay tools: needle tool and rolling pin
  • Black underglaze, paintbrushes, & water cup
  • Cafeteria-type trays & paper towels

Steps

Review Greek Art & Use Template to Create Shape

Review ancient Greek art. Select a template for the slab pottery vessel. Place a slab of red clay on a paper towel on a tray. Lay the template on top of the clay slab. Gently press the template into the clay. Cut around the template with a needle tool. Smooth the edges.
