Description

Students will create accordion books to visually communicate excerpts from a historical text. Students will be introduced to famous diaries and journals throughout history and use a variety of media represent their chosen author’s words.

Supplies and Materials

  • White construction paper (cut to 9” x 18”)
  • Cardboard (cut to 4” x 9”)
  • Decorative materials for covers (fabric, wrapping paper, scrapbook paper)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Drawing media (pencils, colored pencils, oil pastels, crayons, etc.)
  • Artwork from different cultures

Discuss how journals can give us insight into a person’s time, place, and culture and values. Select a historical journal/novel to illustrate (Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, Diary of Anne Frank, Number the Stars, etc.)
