Make-Believe Masks

Lesson Plan

Description

Students will create their own fantasy, make-believe inspired mask using multimedia techniques. They will paint, cut, paste, and draw elements to make their masks, and then write a dialogue to perform, using the mask, to present in front of their peers.

Students will compare and contrast reality versus fantasy and learn about Surrealism art.

Students will create a fantastical monster or fairy mask using a variety of multimedia materials.

Students will experiment with painting, drawing, collage, and sculptural techniques to make their masks.

Students will create a dialogue or miniature make-believe play with a peer to perform for their class.

Teaching Strategies

  • Facilitate a discussion on reality versus fantasy with students and how art can represent both. Introduce Surrealism.
  • Prepare the various materials to be used, especially the cardboard mask bases.
  • Demonstrate how to paint cardboard and add potential features.
  • Show how to manipulate paper and proper adhesive techniques.
  • Prepare and explain dialogue/miniature make-believe presentation steps and demonstration.
