Description
Students will learn about figure-ground relationships while using van Gogh’s Starry Night as a reference for creating a high-contrast skyline silhouette. They will use crayon resist and the phases of the moon in their sky.

Students will use a variety of processes and materials to create art with a foreground, middle ground, and background.
Students will incorporate movement and emphasis using color and shape.
Teaching Strategies
- Guide students as they speculate about the process used in van Gogh’s Starry Night.
- Facilitate a discussion about how foreground, middle ground, and background are used in artwork.
- Highlight the use of the element of emphasis in artwork.
- Demonstrate the crayon-resist technique and cutting paper to create silhouetted buildings.
