Oaxacan Metal Carving

Description

Students will explore Oaxaca, Mexico’s notable animal wood carvings by creating a realistic animal inspired by those carvings using unrealistic colors and patterns. They will create their animal by carving it on metal tooling foil and adding bold color with permanent markers.

Students will add unrealistic patterns and colors inside their animal.

Students will learn how to emboss on metal tooling foil.

Students will discuss Oaxacan carvings and their importance to the Mexican community.

Teaching Strategies

  • Introduce the art of Oaxaca, Mexico and show examples of Oaxacan wood carvings.
  • Lead a discussion on the importance of animals to the Mexican community.
  • Demonstrate how to place a paper drawing over metal foil and trace over it to indent the metal.
  • Discuss craftsmanship when embossing and coloring art.
