Lesson Objectives

Students will analyze and discuss the Op Art movement and significant artists that contributed to that art period.

Students will use measuring concepts to design an optical illusion, creating cubes to form a stand-alone high relief.

Students will learn how the elements of art and the principles of design can create movement and direction in a piece.

Students will repeat the building of cubes to create the illusion of depth.

Students will experiment with contrasting color schemes to emphasize an optical illusion.

Teaching Strategies

  • Introduce the Op Art movement and significant artists that contributed to that art period.
  • Distinguish the differences between 2D and 3D art with students.
  • Describe the project goals by explaining that the 3D design will be created by measuring and assembling multiple cubes.
  • Discuss the cube shape and its dimensions.
  • Explain that an optical illusion will be created by using the repetition of line, shape, and contrasting colors.
