Lesson Objectives

Students will create a clay platter with pattern impressions. They will use handmade tools to create unique patterns.

Students will sculpt a clay platter using the slab construction technique.

Students will create a unique pattern impression design for their clay platters.

Students will reflect and revise as necessary as they move through the creative process.

Teaching Strategies

  • Show various pattern rollers both manufactured and handmade.
  • Demonstrate how to make a pattern roller using lines and shapes.
  • Demonstrate how to use a concave mold and clay slab to construct a shallow platter.
  • Demonstrate how to make clay impressions using pattern rollers.
  • Guide students to reflect and revise, if necessary, as they move through the processes.

  • Wallpaper roller & hot glue gun
  • Pencil & paintbrush
  • Low or high fire clay & ceramic glaze
  • Rolling pin & ¼” measuring dowels
  • Shallow dish for a platter mold
  • Needle tool & texture tools
  • Water bowl, cornstarch, & sponge
  • Pattern roller samples
