Pop & Lock: Informative Accordions

Lesson Plan

Description

Students will create an informative pop-up book using an accordion fold. Students will select an artistic element or topic of personal interest to illustrate in their books. Structures will be used to educate peers about the selected topic.

Students will create a book that demonstrates knowledge of a specific element of art or area of personal interest.

Students will explore paper folding techniques and demonstrate quality craftsmanship in the accordion and pop-up folds.

Students will reflect on the process of selecting a topic for its educational efficacy.

Teaching Strategies

  • Lead discussion on informative/educational art.
  • Guide peer brainstorming session for topic ideas.
  • Introduce how to fold an accordion and create pop-ups.
  • Provide feedback as students experiment folding different kinds of paper.
  • Review effective strategies for educating peers through art and illustration.
  • Present several examples of cover design.

  • 1½”” x 3” pop-up template
  • Pencils
  • Scissors
  • Rulers
  • Bone folders (optional)
  • 3 ¾” x 6 ¼” cover paper
  • Mixed media for illustrations and covers
