Description

Students will create an accordion book with their choice of mixed media materials. They will explore universal themes by composing a haiku to write in their assembled accordion book and collaboratively present their work.

Students will collaboratively interpret information that helps identity artists' ideas.

Students will use concept maps and thumbnail drawings to help formulate artistic investigations to create their art.

Students will experiment with a variety of artmaking materials, methods, and approaches.

Students will learn and apply paper folding accordion book techniques.

Students will write a personal haiku and embed text into their book and then collaboratively prepare and present work.

Teaching Strategies

  • Facilitate a discussion on contextual information within mixed media art to help identify ideas.
  • Teach experimental, choice-based art techniques like washes and gelatin prints for book pages.
  • Demonstrate proper accordion book folding techniques and book page assembly.
  • Provide a variety of art tools and supply sources like water, paint, collage, sponges, and stencils.
  • Assist in writing haiku poems.
  • Facilitate collaborative class presentations.

  • 5" x 7" tag board
  • Mixed media choices: gesso, paint, marker, pencil, etc.
  • Collage materials
  • Stencils & popsicle stick
  • Gelatin prints or part of abandoned art
  • X-ACTO knife or scissors
  • Glue sticks or white glue
