Description

Students will analyze the work of Ana Mendieta. They will create their own nontraditional portrait inspired by her work using their choice of medium and grid enlargement to create smashed-face self-portraits as they experiment with value and contrast in their work.

Students will take photos and select a photo that represents themselves for a nontraditional self-portrait.

Students will experiment with value and contrast to create a self-portrait in a medium of their choice.

Students will explore the social, cultural, and historical ideas of beauty and what makes a successful portrait.

Teaching Strategies

  • Introduce the work of Ana Mendieta.
  • Show how to smash a face against a see-through pane or glass and take photographs.
  • Encourage students to curate closely cropped images and consider composition as they plan and work.
  • Demonstrate grid drawing with the Grid Drawing Practice worksheet.
  • Assist students in laying out the grid for their own drawings and applying value using their chosen medium.
  • Facilitate a discussion about portraiture and the idea of beauty.
