Description
Students will create functional jewelry from sheet metal. They will choose an empowering word and design a unique font by considering positive and negative space as they pierce, saw, and refine the word with options to form and embellish based on function.

Students will define growth mindset and identify the impact of words on mental health.
Students will research and develop lettering to create a unique font using positive and negative space.
Students will create their metalwork from a paper template and sheet metal by sawing and refining.
Teaching Strategies
- Facilitate a class discussion about growth mindset and the power of words while collaboratively creating a list.
- Guide students in researching lettering and developing a unique font.
- Show the purpose of a template and guide students through the process of piercing and sawing metal.
- Demonstrate refinement techniques, such as filing, sanding, and buffing.

Supplies and Materials
- Paper, pencil, eraser, scissors, glue stick
- Sheet metal (20 or 24 gauge)
- Bench pin, sandpaper (500+)
- Jeweler’s frame, sawblades (#2/0),
- Hand drill or metal hole punch
- Hand and needle files, safety glasses, dust/particle mask
- Optional: wrist mandrel, chasing hammer, rawhide mallet
- Optional: wax cube, embellishing materials
