Under Cover: A Hidden Sculpture

Description

Students will experiment with an ancient map fold and learn how books can be more than simple vehicles for text. Books can be presentation pieces and hidden sculptural pieces of art. Students will create a map fold book sculpture.

Students will explore traditional and non-traditional uses of books.

Students will demonstrate proper map folding technique.

Students will experiment with the sculptural aspects of paper folding.

Students will reflect on the historic purpose of the map fold versus how they are currently using it.

  • Facilitate a discussion about various uses of books.
  • Provide examples of atypical book structures and uses.
  • Demonstrate the map fold and book construction.
  • Allow students to practice and experiment with multiple map folds.
  • Review the multiple possibilities of book structures and prompt reflection on current practice versus historic use.

  • 4 ⅝” x 12 ¼” tagboard or painted paper for cover
  • Mixed media for cover design
  • Velcro dots
  • Bone folder (optional)
