Lesson Objectives

Students will analyze the optical illusions of famous op artist Victor Vasarely.

Students will use geometric elements to create an op art drawing.

Students will explore negative space to create a variety of illusive shapes.

Students will experiment with the elements of art, space, and shape through repetition, line, and negative space.

Students will overcome creative blocks as they create their design.

Students will explore the principles of design by using contrasting colors to create their linear design.

Teaching Strategies

  • Introduce a brief historical context on the Op Art movement.
  • Discuss the work of Victor Vasarely and his technique of using measured equidistant lines to create illusive shapes.
  • Discuss how op art uses geometric lines and describe geometric terms using the Geometry of Lines resource.
  • Show how to measure sixteenths of an inch and/or centimeters to create equidistant perpendicular and parallel lines.
  • Guide students in brainstorming and overcoming creative blocks as they design Vasarely-inspired designs.
  • Assist students in choosing final designs and creating their drawn op art pieces.
