The colorful nature of Day of the Dead makes it a great holiday to learn about in the art room. If you have students that study Mexico in Social Studies or in Spanish Class, this lesson is a natural cross-curricular fit. I like that the silly and beautiful skulls seen during Day of the Dead immediately engage students and that because of their interest, they work extremely hard to create their own unique designs. You can create skull tracers to complete this project in a scale that works for you. I generally use a skull shape about eight inches tall.
