This is one of my all-time favorite lessons. Students are able to design homes in different styles of American architecture and create environments for them. My love for this lesson goes way back. In fact, I actually did this lesson myself when I was in 5th grade, and it’s one I just couldn’t shake. I always show students my example from 5th grade, (yes, I kept all of my artwork) and it motivates them to see examples from past classes as well. The amount of ownership students take in this project is impressive, making it very successful. You will want to plan plenty of time, as it can take awhile to get all the details done, but it is so worth it!
Check out some more student examples below. In addition, I’ve provided a PDF of the vocabulary I use if you’re interested in downloading it!
