Grant Wood’s landscape paintings serve as an excellent motivation for this clay project. If you have students from Iowa or the Midwest, they will be naturally drawn to this project because of the local connection. The Dropping in on Grant Wood video is an excellent video to use as motivation. I also like to read the Mike Venezia, Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artist: Grant Wood while students work. If you want to include slab rolling as one of the techniques you teach, you can have students roll out their own.
