This lesson is one of the first lessons to introduce line and shape to 1st grade students.  Students will independently draw at least 1 geometric shape and 3 different line types, all while learning about Kandinsky’s style of abstract painting. Because Kandinsky listened to music while he painted, the students also get to experience classical music while painting.  It’s amazing how quiet the room gets when this happens. These paintings are successful not only because of the art history and art elements they teach, but the products also turn out to be something parents want to frame in their homes: a win/win situation for everyone.

I enjoy your site but the advertisements are a real distraction. Do you make money from them?

Downloading printable lesson plans on PDF is EXTREMELY VALUABLE to me! I am starting a new job as an elementary art teacher this year. I am working to create a file or a binder (more likely) that contains all the lessons for the year. I will collect as I go so that (hopefully) next year I will have all the lessons laid out and ready. Our state has each element on a objective, so I plan to teach the same subject (line, for example) each week to all grades K-6, in our case. Keep up the good work! You are helping me to be successful and lower stress in my new job MORE THAN YOU KNOW!

Jessica: I just wish this lesson were all about line since in my case we do shape the following week–but STILL extremely helpful, THANKS!

      • Thanks for your feedback, and I am glad the lessons are helpful! I always used this as an assessment of line and introduction to shape, I suppose it can’t hurt to talk about shapes too much!

  • selfish comment/ask here….your lesson plan pro forma…is it available to get a copy or if not are you able to give some hints on how to make one easily??? they look great!!!

    • Kristy,
