Each year, monarch butterflies return to Mexico for the winter. This migration coincides with the Mexican holiday Días de los Muertos, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. The event is significant in certain parts of Mexico where the return of the butterflies is likened to the return of the souls of loved ones. This project is a great way to introduce students to this beautiful holiday. You could also pull in a science connection as you talk about the life cycle of a butterfly.
Here are some great ways to introduce this project.
Have students watch the trailer for Flight of the Butterflies 3D.
Watch portions of the movie The Book of Life.
Watch the short Día de los Muertos by Film School Shorts.
Read a book about Día de los Muertos.
