This lesson is great for introducing students to the concept of observation. You can have students observe how birch trees are different than other trees, observe the details in birch bark and observe how shadows are cast when the sun shines on something. I recommend taking or finding some photos of birch trees to help your students visualize these concepts. The process is quick and easy and yields beautiful results.  Allowing students choice in number of trees, placement of branches, and paint colors makes each piece unique. These make a spectacular winter bulletin board display and also make great gifts for students to bring home to loved ones. As the second day requires multiple steps, I created the following directions, which I project on my whiteboard for students to follow.

I do a birch tree lesson, also, but have them print on the black lines of the tree with a small piece of cardboard and use a sponge to paint some greenery poking up through the snow! They love to count the number of watercolor techniques they are testing out!
