Engage diverse learners in the art room by examining unwanted behaviors, while learning how to teach, model, and encourage desired behaviors.
Art educators encounter a wide range of diverse students each day. However, according to a 2019 report by the National Center for Learning Disabilities, only 30% of teachers surveyed felt confident they could successfully engage diverse learners. This course will explore classroom management strategies and best practices to foster positive behaviors and create accessible learning in the art room to engage a diverse range of students. Participants will examine behavior challenges, and investigate how to prevent and redirect unwanted behaviors. They will also examine ways to teach, model, and encourage desired behaviors.

- Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition. ISBN 978-1-4338-3216-1. If you do not already own this manual from an earlier AOEU course.

Reflecting on Inclusion
- Develop an understanding of implicit bias and its effect on your classroom.
- Explore causes of deficit thinking and how it affects relationship building.
Week 2
Building Relationships With Diverse Learners
- Explore new strategies for student-teacher and parent-teacher relationship building.
Week 3
Setting High Expectations in the Classroom
- Evaluate deficit thinking vs. strength-based perspectives of students with disabilities.
- Develop a lesson plan that helps students scaffold to their strengths and set goals.
Week 4
Creating an Inclusive Classroom
- Utilize wayfinding as a means of identifying areas of your classroom that could be more inclusive to students with physical disabilities.
- Discern between sensory sensitivity and overstimulation and learn how to address each in your classroom.
Week 5
Collaboration in an Inclusive Classroom
- Explore ways to cultivate collaboration with your students and special education specialists.
Week 6
Behavior as Communication
- Explore root causes of behavior and how behavior functions as communication.
- Develop positive behavior strategies that support diverse learners in their unique situations.
Week 7
Behavior Plans for the Art Classroom
- Explore different methods and approaches to behavior management and interventions.
- Create a comprehensive classroom management plan.
Week 8
Reflection
- Reflect on your innovative thinking journey from the beginning to the end.
