Emily Hebert, MA
Adjunct Instructor
Hi! My name is Emily Hebert. I’m an art historian and artist educator driven in all parts of my life by my curiosity about the world and global artmaking traditions. I have always loved museums and creating art and followed these passions throughout my academic studies and professional teaching career. As a lifelong learner and educator, I hope to inspire others to see the meaning art can bring to their lives and the connections it can help them make with others in the past and the present. While working as a high school art teacher in Hawaii, my main goal has been to help advance my students’ formal artmaking skills while increasing their cultural awareness and critical-thinking skills for use in the classroom and more broadly as they interact in the world.
I love practicing studio art, especially working with clay and the practice of wheel-throwing. I love the challenge of wheel-throwing and its ability to engage an individual in a holistic, mindful, and interdisciplinary approach to artmaking. I also enjoy working with other 3D and mixed media practices that blur the lines between craft and fine art.
I have a deep love for the study of art history. My graduate research in art history has focused on the theory of multivalence within early Buddhist narrative art traditions. My work examines the powerful ability of images produced in multicultural environments to encode complex, layered visual narratives that can be decoded by different viewers depending on their individual beliefs and experiences. I love researching theoretical art history topics and adapting them for younger learners to help increase visual literacy skills and deepen engagement with art in the classroom.
Beyond my interests in artmaking and visiting museums, I also love traveling and exploring the world, learning ancient and modern languages, practicing yoga, getting outside to enjoy nature, and spending time with my family and friends every chance I can.
