About the Author

Alexandra Overby

Hello everyone, my name is Alexandra Overby, and I have been in art education for over twenty years. Currently, I teach at an urban high school in downtown Denver, Colorado, where I work with students in AP Studio Art, Digital Photography, and AP Art History. I have a hybrid role where I split my time between teaching classes and coaching teachers, which allows me to be a leader within my school. I was the 2018 Colorado High School Art Educator of the Year.

I am a Sun Devil through and through, ending with a Ph.D. in Art Education (go Devils!). I have worked with a range of students from pre-K to adults and have taught at Alabama A&M University, Arizona State University, and the University of Denver. I have presented at many conferences, including the National Art Education Association, the International Visual Sociology Association, the Colorado Art Educator’s Association, the Arizona Art Educators Association, and the Society for Photographic Educators. I am published in Art Education, School Arts, Arts & Activities, and of course, The Art of Education Magazine. My research includes issues of equity, photography practice, visual ethnography, technology in art education, and secondary curriculum issues. I love hanging out with my three girls in my spare time and helping run an independent winter guard group here in Denver.

Professional Achievements:

Arizona State University Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (1998)

Arizona State University Master’s Degree (2000)

Arizona State University Doctorate Degree (2011)
