Tim Bogatz: Welcome to the show, everyone. We have something today that I have not done in quite a while: a solo episode. Honestly, I cannot even remember the last time I did a solo episode, so we will see how it goes. We received so many questions for next week’s mailbag that we could not fit them all in. Today, I am going to do a mini mailbag and answer a few questions on my own.

We will see how it goes, but I am looking forward to giving it a try and offering a little bit of advice. We will not have Amanda’s expertise in all of the things I am bad at, so it may not be quite as good. Make sure you tune in next week for the full mailbag. We have so many great questions.

With the start of the year, there are a lot of things coming up and a lot of issues that people want advice on. So, we are going to dive into a mini mailbag with a solo episode.

Before I jump into the questions, I want to remind you that the Lunch Bunch community livestream is happening Friday in the Art of Ed Community at noon Central time. It is a great way to connect live with people in the Art of Ed Community. It is just half an hour—a relaxed 30-minute lunch break spent hanging out with people from the Art of Ed team.

Sometimes Jen has guests from our team, and sometimes she has different teachers on. It is simply a relaxed time to eat, listen, and hang out. Nobody has their cameras on except Jen and the guest, but you can join in the chat if you want. You can also just listen to the conversation in the background while you work, make copies, cut paper, or do whatever else you need to do.

If you want to take a real break over your lunch hour, you can do that, too. And if you cannot make it live, everything is recorded and available later in the Art of Ed Community. It is fun, calm, laid-back, and a great way to connect. That will be happening this Friday at noon Central time, so make sure you check it out.

We had a lot of great questions come in, and we have a great mailbag episode coming next week with Amanda. But first, let’s do a little mini mailbag this week. Let’s dive in.

Sorry, I had to do the sound. I hope Amanda does not mind me borrowing it for this episode, but it does not feel like a mailbag without our postal-service soundtrack.

The first question is from Ashley in Colorado:

Most classes are going really well. Students understand the routines, they usually participate, and they are generally pretty good. But I have one class that feels completely different. They are louder, more distracted, less respectful of the studio environment, and much harder to redirect. I have tried being more serious, giving more reminders, changing the seating arrangement, talking to individual students—everything I am “supposed” to be doing—but the class still feels like a daily struggle. How can I figure out what is different about this group and get them on track? I am starting to lose some confidence.

This is a tough one, but I think every teacher who has been around for a while will tell you that it is not unusual. Most teachers deal with this multiple times over the course of their careers. Most of your days go well, but there is one class you dread.

There can be a lot of different reasons for that. The first thing I would say is to recognize that one challenging class does not erase all of the success happening throughout the rest of your day. It is easy to dwell on what is going wrong and what you are struggling with, but it is important to remember that you are still doing great things for so many other students. Spend some time thinking about those successes and recognizing them, too.

It sounds like you are doing many of the right things. I do not know that a single piece of specific advice is going to change everything other than continuing to give reminders, talk with students, change the seating arrangement, and do what you need to do. But I have talked about this before in classroom management podcasts and conversations: You need to teach and reteach expectations.

You may dread doing it, and it can become frustrating, but you need to reteach those expectations as if the class is starting over. Do not assume that students should already know exactly what to do or what you want them to do. Tell them, “I am going to keep teaching this until you get it right.” Then keep teaching and reteaching.

From there, choose two or three non-negotiables—two or three expectations to focus on first. Do not try to correct everything at once. Do not try to address every behavior immediately. Instead, choose the behaviors that matter most.

For example, your non-negotiables might be that phones are put away during demonstrations and that students do not talk while you are talking. Focus on those. Correct those behaviors over and over, and reteach those expectations as often as needed. Once those routines are established, you can build from there and address other behaviors.

I am not saying that you should let everything go. I am saying that you should focus and make sure you get one or two non-negotiables established before trying to fix everything else.

I would also make the first few minutes of class especially predictable and purposeful. You may need to teach and reteach that routine, too. Make sure you are setting the stage for positive behavior. If you can establish a productive beginning to class, that can give you some positive momentum throughout the rest of the period.

Do not let the reputation of the class shape your interactions with them. That can be easier said than done. I have definitely found myself dreading a class because it was not the best class, and that dread can cast a pall over everything you do.

You may overreact a little because you are already thinking, “I have to deal with this class again.” Then things that should not be a big deal become a big deal because of the history or reputation you have created in your mind.

There is probably another conversation to be had about how students sometimes act out the identity or descriptors that adults have assigned to them. But for now, do not let previous interactions color everything you do. Try to start fresh with them.

Another thing I was thinking about is asking for help through an observation. Ask someone else to come in and tell you what they are seeing and what advice they have. That could be an administrator, a colleague, or somebody else who is good with classroom management.

It can be difficult to swallow your pride and say, “I need help,” but that is much easier than dealing with the same issues over and over without anything getting better.

Finally, give yourself permission to measure your progress in smaller ways. Maybe you see a calm transition or a productive work period. One of those can be a meaningful step forward. You can acknowledge it, tell students that you appreciate it, and see if that helps your interactions moving forward.

There are a lot of things you can do, but do not get too discouraged. Focus on the small things, take the small wins where you can get them, and remember that incremental progress can build as you move through the year.

Our second question, also about classroom management, is from Kevin in Georgia:

I teach high school art, and I am struggling with demonstrations. When I stop to demonstrate a technique, some students talk, some use their phones, some work ahead, and some disengage completely. If I pause to correct behavior, the demonstration loses momentum, but if I ignore the behavior, eventually everybody stops paying attention. I also worry that my demonstrations are too long and overwhelming or too short to be useful. I want my classroom to feel like a studio. I do not want to be lecturing, but I need students to understand the techniques and expectations before they begin working. Advice?

I hate to be the ten-thousandth person to bring this up, but attention spans are short. You are competing with the dopamine hits students get from their phones and the short videos they watch. Trying to give an eight-minute demonstration to students who are used to 15-second bursts of entertainment can be difficult.

So, first, try to scale things back. Kevin said he does not want his demonstrations to be too short to be useful, and that is valid. But students need demonstrations to be brief, visual, relevant, and connected to something specific—something they are going to do right away.

If you are six minutes into talking, you may have already lost a lot of your students. Rethink what you want to accomplish with the demonstration and streamline it. That might mean breaking longer demonstrations into smaller chunks. After a quick demonstration, students have time to practice and apply the skill. Then you bring them back for the next step.

That can be a lot to manage, but it may be a better approach than trying to squeeze everything into one long demonstration. Start with the essential techniques students need. Give them what they need to begin, and let them start. Then you can add optional extensions and additional information later.

The first step is to figure out the framework for your demonstrations. What are you trying to accomplish, and what do your students actually need? Give them the essentials, let them take it from there, and come back later with more information.

As far as behavior issues, establish the expectations. When you are going to demonstrate, where do materials go? Where do tools belong? Are phones put away? Do students need their sketchbooks? Where are works in progress during the demonstration?

Figure out exactly what you want the demonstration to look like, teach and reteach those expectations, and stay consistent. Tell students what you need them to do, explain why you are doing the demonstration, and then give them the information they need.

Once you have established expectations, follow through. Also, figure out the best way to get your students’ attention. Is it helpful for them to stand and gather around a central area? Do you have a demonstration station?

You might shift the classroom mode instead of saying, “Everybody look up here.” If students get up and move around, that may signal a change and help them pay attention for a little while. You may find that it does not work or that it backfires. It may take some trial and error to figure out what works for your students.

Explaining why students need to know something can also be helpful. Give them a reason to watch. Frame the demonstration by saying, “You are going to run into this problem soon,” or, “This is going to happen in this project, so here is what you need to know.” Telling students why the information will be useful may help you grab a little more of their attention.

The last thing to keep in mind is that a successful demonstration does not require every student to stand perfectly still and focus directly on you. Students pay attention in different ways. That does not mean you should let them talk, use their phones, or do whatever they want. When your expectations are clear, though, understand that students may process information in different ways.

The goal is for students to understand the process and work productively afterward. If that is happening, you are in good shape. Think about your expectations, the framing of your demonstration, and how to pack the most important information into a short amount of time. Then give students a practical application. That should help your demonstrations become more effective.

Our next question is from Priya in Maryland:

I am getting a fairly significant grant this fall. I am excited, but I am also nervous about spending it wisely. There are a lot of things I would love to have in the art room, but I am not sure what to do. I do not want to use the money on items that look impressive but do not improve student learning or get used. I also want to make sure the purchases are sustainable and manageable long term. How do I make the most of this money and make sure it has value for a long period of time?

There is a lot to think about here. I have never received a ton of grants, so I am not the best expert, but I have received a few. I will share some things that I think are worthwhile to consider.

Begin with the purpose of the grant. Think about why you wrote it and what you were trying to accomplish. Make sure that whatever you buy connects to those goals. That will help you focus on what is most useful.

Take inventory of your classroom and ask yourself: What can students currently not do? What is blocked or unavailable to them? Is the problem a lack of materials, equipment, access, or expertise? What do you want students to do that they cannot do right now? Then ask how you can use the grant money to solve that problem.

Prioritize things that will let more students make work or let students make work of higher quality. That might mean materials, equipment, or something else entirely.

Think beyond the initial cost. Consider whether an item will require maintenance, replacement parts, or consumable materials. If you are buying something specialized, make sure there is a clear plan for who will use it, how often it will be used, who will be responsible for it, and who will teach people how to use it.

I am always a fan of buying things that function as infrastructure for the art room: drying racks, quality storage, work surfaces, ventilation, or whatever else you need. There are many purchases that can improve the quality of life for you and your students—new stools, new tables, or anything that makes the art room more functional.

Try to find a balance between those larger improvements and the basics students use every day.

I would also suggest leaning into other teachers’ experience. Priya, if you are in the Art of Ed Community, this is a great question to ask there. Say, “I received a grant. What would you use it for? What have you gotten grants for in the past? How did you use them?” Build on those experiences. See what people have done and what advice they have, then incorporate that into your purchases.

Finally, ask yourself how you would explain the purchase to someone else. If you had to explain how what you are buying helps your students, what would you say? If you had to explain how it makes their art room experience better, what would you say?

Those questions can guide you toward purchases that will truly be helpful.

Our next question is from Lauren in Oregon:

I left my previous school because I was convinced the environment was the main reason I felt burned out. My new school is great, and in some ways the change has helped, but I still feel exhausted, disconnected, and overwhelmed. I am discouraged because I thought switching schools would give me a fresh start. Now I am wondering whether the problem might just be me. I do not want to make another major decision from a place of exhaustion, but I also cannot keep functioning this way indefinitely. How can I figure out what I am experiencing, whether this is burnout, and how can I decide what needs to change next?

I do not know that I can tell you what needs to change. This is a very personal decision, but there are some things that may be helpful to think through.

First, acknowledge that changing schools can remove a source of stress. Getting away from a toxic environment, difficult administrators, or challenging colleagues can be incredibly helpful. But two things can also be true: A new school can create new problems, and changing schools may not address deeper exhaustion or accumulated burnout—the slow burn that builds over years.

A new workplace can be wonderful, but it will not immediately fix every problem. You may need to give it more time. Do not expect it to be an immediate solution.

Take inventory of what is draining your energy. What are you dreading? What are you not enjoying? On the other side, take inventory of what restores your energy. What helps you feel better? What feels restorative?

There are a million things that work for different people. It could be more art-making, more exercise, more time alone, or more time socially with other people. There are many ways to find what you enjoy and spend more time doing it.

As far as school itself, if you are feeling burned out, identify one or two boundaries that can provide immediate relief. Maybe you do not answer emails after work hours. Maybe you stop volunteering for additional responsibilities. Maybe you simplify your lessons or curriculum.

Choose a couple of things that can genuinely help and follow through with them. Those boundaries can offer immediate relief.

For the bigger picture, I would not make any major decisions yet. Give yourself more time at the new school, and try some of the things that can offer relief before making long-term career decisions.

As you continue, evaluate the new school based on what is happening and what you can see happening in the future—not just the first few months. The beginning of a new environment is always difficult. There are many stressors and challenges that make things harder.

Give it more time. As you figure out what will help, identify boundaries and work on addressing the burnout. Also consider the long term: Do you need more rest? Would a short leave help? Would a role change or reduced responsibilities make a difference?

All of those possibilities deserve consideration, but try not to make the decision too quickly. Give yourself time, and give yourself an honest opportunity to work on the problems before making a major decision about your future.

Finally, our last question comes from Monica in North Carolina. Monica wants to become a more organized and put-together teacher, but she does not necessarily feel like she has the personality for it. I can relate to this. It was a question I wanted to bring to Amanda, and then I realized that Amanda is so Type A that she might have no idea how to deal with this. So I am going to take this one solo, and I think it is a good one to end on.

Monica says:

I am a creative, flexible teacher, and I know that my relaxed personality helps me connect with students and adapt when things change. I also struggle with organization, deadlines, clutter, and keeping track of all the small details that come with being a teacher. I feel like I am one forgotten form, missing supply, or last-minute scramble away from being completely overwhelmed. I want to be more organized, but I do not want to become a rigid person or create systems that are too complicated to keep up with. How can I become more organized and appear more prepared while still working with my natural personality instead of fighting against it?

This is a great question and something I had to deal with as a teacher. I eventually realized that my Type B, easygoing, laid-back personality was not always the best thing for my students. I needed to become a little more organized, and that would help both my students and me.

This is a valid goal, but you do not need to change your personality. Reframe organization as a way to reduce stress and help your students—not as a way to become a different type of person.

As you start, build systems around actual habits and patterns you will follow through with. When do you work best during the day? Build around who you are and what you actually do, not an idealized version of yourself. Do not think, “If only I were different, I could do these things.” Think about what makes sense to you and what you will realistically maintain.

Here are a few things that help me.

First, use one central location for important information, deadlines, lesson plans, and recurring tasks. Organize it however you want. It might be a planner, a notebook, sticky notes, or a paper tray. The format does not matter as much as having one place where the information lives.

Put the forms, reminders, and details you need to remember in that same location. That can help you avoid the last-minute scramble.

I would also create a weekly planning ritual that is short, predictable, and focused on the upcoming week. Figure out what you need to do, what reminders you need, and what is coming up. Use a calendar or planner—whatever helps you see the week clearly.

If it is helpful, create repeatable checklists. You can laminate them if you want. What do you need to do every day to start the room? Set up the room, prep the materials, and get everything ready. What do you need to do before you leave? Clean up, put materials away, and make sure the room is ready for the next day.

Create a checklist and make sure you get through it before you leave.

Also, figure out storage and labeling for your materials. I have talked about this many times on the podcast, but put things where they belong and label them so it is easier for you to find them. It will also be easier for your students to find what they need.

Those are all helpful steps for making your room more organized and less stressful for you and your students.

When you say you want to be more put together, create a realistic definition of what “put together” means for you. You do not need to change your personality, but you can make things clearer and simpler in your classroom.

Students need clarity and consistency. They do not need perfect bulletin boards, a perfectly clean teacher desk, or a beautifully styled classroom. They need consistent routines, and they need you to know where everything is.

Once you establish that, it will be incredibly helpful for everyone.

Finally, remember that being a Type B personality can be a real strength. If you are flexible, warm, and open, your students may respond well to those qualities. Those are qualities of a very good teacher.

Keep those qualities, then support yourself with a few dependable plans, structures, and routines. That will go a long way toward helping you feel better and teach better.

You do not need to change what you are doing entirely. Just improve it a little. Take small steps that will help you and your students.

Thank you all for coming with me on this quick journey—a little mini mailbag before the full mailbag comes out next week. I am looking forward to chatting with Amanda next week.

Hopefully, we will see you at Lunch Bunch on Friday, and we will see you for our regularly scheduled October mailbag podcast next week with Amanda. We will talk to you then.
