How to Make Fun Abstract Collages + Tips to Teach Abstraction

Abstraction is a challenging concept for students to grasp, both when looking at art and making their own. It’s even tricky for adults, too! However, abstract play is a wonderful opportunity to quickly get ideas on paper. It helps students focus on the process of artmaking without the pressure of having it look realistic.

Sarah Krajewski is an elementary art teacher, artist, and overall creative person. Join Sarah as she makes some super fun abstract pieces and shares her pro tips along the way!

Try these tips in your next abstract play session:

  • Work on several pieces at one time
  • Underpaint basic shapes
  • Add collage elements
  • Move things around
  • Rotate compositions
  • Glue everything down
  • Draw on top
  • Title your work
