This TAB lesson is great for getting kids to think deeply about art. Students will use the painting Forward by artist Jacob Lawrence as a starting point. They will analyze how this depiction of Harriet Tubman gives the viewer information about the realities of slavery and depicts the bravery of those who resisted it. In addition, this lesson connects to National Standard Anchor Standard 11: Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding.
