Art is a powerful therapeutic tool for physiological, social, emotional, and spiritual growth and healing. In this course, participants will explore the transformative power of creativity through therapeutic artmaking activities and reflective practices. This course introduces participants to various therapeutic art education practices, the healing power of art in relation to self and others, and methods for developing creativity and imagination. By course end, participants will understand how to organically, purposefully, and ethically integrate therapeutic strategies into their classroom management methods, instructional strategies, art education curriculum, assessments, and personal artmaking practices.

- Sketchbook for Visual Journaling – 8”x10” or larger
- Oil pastel or wax crayon
- Watercolors and brushes
- Your choice of a variety of art-making materials for drawing, painting, collage
- Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition. ISBN 978-1-4338-3216-1 If you do not already own this manual from an earlier AOEU course.
Additional Materials
- Computer with basic audio and video input and output equipment
- Internet access (broadband recommended)
- Basic computing skills (see AOEU’s Technology Requirements)
- Access to AOEU’s online learning platform, Brightspace, to view course content, submit assignments, and engage in discussion (provided)
- A Google Drive account (not provided by AOEU)
