Earn a Single Subject Credential in Art with flexible, online courses.
The Art of Education University offers a pathway for credentialed teachers in California to add a Single Subject Credential in Art and become eligible to teach visual arts in grades K-9.
This pathway is for you if you…
- Hold a Multiple Subject Credential or Single Subject Credential in California
- Want to teach K-12 art in California schools
- Are looking for online coursework that is immediately applicable to an art room

Your 4-Step Path with AOEU
Step 2:
Take Courses
Complete at least one, 3-credit course from each of the subject areas below, for a minimum of 10 credit hours plus one 3-credit methodology course. Work closely with your student coach and select Morningside University as the institution of record.
Drawing & Painting
(Select 1 or more courses)
Crafts
(Select 1 or more courses)
Art History & Appreciation
(Select 1 or more courses)
Plus one 3-credit course in methodology: Managing the Art Room or Methods of Art Education.
Step 3:
Request your official transcripts
Your official transcripts will be issued by AOEU’s partner, Morningside University. You will receive an email confirmation when your grade is available. Learn more here.
Step 4:
Submit your courses to the Commission for Teacher Credentialing
Review the application and follow the instructions carefully.
- In Part 2, select Add Subject/Authorization to Existing Document.
- In Part 3, select Single Subject.
- In Part 4, select Single Subject, and Art as the subject area
Additional documentation can be submitted with your application to explain equivalencies, methodology requirements, or other information. If the state requests a letter with additional information to include with your application, please email studentservices@theartofeducation.edu.
