*Note: Individuals seeking initial certification in Maryland must meet all Maryland State requirements, which may include completing an approved teacher preparation program. AOEU coursework may satisfy select requirements, but it does not, on its own, lead to initial licensure. Add Art to Your Maryland Teaching License
If you already hold a Maryland teaching license and want to add an endorsement in Art, you must complete 24 credits in the content area. At least 12 credits must be in art content, and the remaining credits must be related to the content area.

Initial License in Art
If you are working toward an initial teaching license in art, Maryland offers several pathways, including the Fine Arts Transcript Analysis pathway for individuals with demonstrated content expertise and a BA or higher in the Licensure Area.
The Maryland State Department of Education has designed the Fine Arts Transcript Analysis pathway. Consider relevant, engaging coursework through AOEU, which may help satisfy select requirements of the pathway:
- 24 semester hours of content coursework
- 21 semester hours of professional coursework
